Mail Setup in Mac OS X 10.4

This tutorial will show you how to set up the built-in mail program, "Mail," which comes with Mac OS X 10.4.

  1. Upon opening Mail for the first time, you will be prompted to configure it to retrieve your email.
  2. You will be prompted for some general information about your email.
        a. Select "POP" in the "Account Type" pull-down menu.
        b. Enter whatever you wish for the "Account Description"
        c. Enter your full name in the "Full Name" field.
        d. Enter your Supranet.net email address in the "Email Address" field.
        e. For more detailed information about each of these fields, click on the "?" button in the lower-left corner of this window.
  3. You will be prompted for information regarding the retrieval of new mail..
        a. Enter "pop.supranet.net" in the "Incoming Mail Server" field.
        b. Enter your Supranet.net login name in the "User Name" field. Note that for this purpose, your login name should be in lower-case.
        c. Enter the password associated with your Supranet.net account in the "Password" field. Note that Supranet.net's mail servers are case-sensitive.
        d. For more detailed information about each of these fields, click on the "?" button in the lower-left corner of this window.
  4. Supranet.net recommends the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) when available.
  5. You will be prompted for information regarding the sending of outbound mail.
        a. Enter "mail.supranet.net" in the "Outgoing Mail Server" field.
        b. Check the box labeled "Use Authentiation."
        c. Enter your Supranet.net login name in the "User Name" field. Note that for this purpose, your login name should be in lower-case.
        e. Enter the password associated with your Supranet.net account in the "Password" field. Note that Supranet.net's mail servers are case-sensitive.
        f. For more detailed information about each of these fields, click on the "?" button in the lower-left corner of this window. 
  6. Again, Supranet.net recommends the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) when available.
  7. You will be prompted to confirm your mail server settings. Please double-check the following values:
         * Incoming Mail Server should display "pop.supranet.net," with SSL on.
         * Outgoing Mail Server should display "mail.supranet.net," with SSL on.

You have now configured your Macintosh's mail client to send and receive mail through Supranet.net.
